ALL ABOUT ST LUCIA LOCATIONS

Point Sable to Maria Island (return) Kayaking Savannes to Scorpion Island (return) Kayaking Praslin Cove to Praslin Island (return) Kayaking

Marigot Bay has been photographed so many times that first time tourists often experience a jolt of recognition. Not surprising. This peaceful landscape of swaying palms and sparkling clear water also caught the eye of film makers who used the bay as a location for the filming of the original Dr Dolittle starring Rex Harrison in 1967.

Rat Island is a tract of land, smaller than a continent, surrounded by water at high water.

Pigeon Island, a 40-acre islet connected by a causeway to St. Lucia's west coast, is a beautiful nature park which reflects a thousand years of history. There are marked trails with a number of historical sites, like the remains of an 18th-century British fort and Fort Rodney, where the Admiral for which it is named spied on the French ships from its strategic viewpoint . The island also has two secluded beaches and is the major venue of St. Lucia's annual Jazz Festival.

Anse Cochon, a remote dark-sand beach is reached only by boat, kayaking or via 1-mi-long (1½-km-long) access road. The water and adjacent reef are superb for swimming, diving, and snorkeling.

The Anse La Liberte site consists of 133 acres of land marked by sloping terain. A 45-minute drive from the capital Castries, this only existing site boasts of trails and its own secluded stretch of beach. The site is equiped with tents, cooking, bathing and washing facilities. Come and enjoy quality service at the Bay of Freedom Site (Anse La Liberte).

Soufrière is a town on the West Coast of Saint Lucia. The town and the surrounding district has a population of 7,935. Originally founded by the French it was the original capital of the island.

There were large estates run by plantation owners of French origin and their descendants still live in the area.

Soufrière has some famous inhabitants, the future Empress of France Joséphine de Beauharnais spent much of her childhood in the area, as well as George Charles, the first Premier of St Lucia. When Queen Elizabeth II visited St Lucia in 1966, she landed at Soufrière rather than Castries.

Today, Soufrière is more dependent on tourism rather than agriculture. The Pitons are just south of the town and there are several attractions in the area. Many of the old estates are still there such as Soufrière Estate, Fond Doux Estate and Rabot Estate.

Gros Piton and Petit Piton are two giant volcanic plugs located south of Soufrière and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sulphur Springs - Soufrière is located within the caldera of the dormant Qualibou volcano and the area is geothermally active. Marketed as a drive-through volcano, there are numerous hot springs and fumaroles.

Soufrière Estate, also known as Diamond Estate, this is an old colonial estate that is home to a botanical garden, sulphur baths and Diamond Falls. Fond Doux Estate, a working plantation where cacao is still processed. St Lucia's Rainforest - there are several rainforest trails in the area with spectacular views, abundant wildlife and several waterfalls such as the Enbas Saut Falls.
